Learning review candidate
Practise one step at a time
Start with the rules
Fill empty cells with 1–9. A number cannot repeat in a row, column, or 3×3 box. Do not change the original clues. In a completed grid, every row, column, and box contains each number exactly once.
A unit is a row, column, or box. A candidate does not clash with the numbers in a cell’s row, column, or box. Being a candidate alone does not establish the answer.
Two different kinds of single
- Naked single: rule out numbers for one cell until only one remains. This is explained here, without a separate exercise.
- Hidden single: rule out positions for one number in a unit until only one remains. The cell may still have other candidates. This practice asks for cases where those other candidates remain.
Check your deduction
- Use the original clues to choose a number missing from a row, column, or box.
- Rule out empty cells that share a row, column, or box with that number. Check that exactly one position remains in your chosen unit.
- Select that cell and number in answer mode. Select the supporting unit, then choose “Check answer”.
- If a number clashes, review the relevant row, column, or box. If there is no clash but the deduction does not match, check whether another possible position remains.
Blue numbers are your entries. Entry checks prevent clashes with the numbers currently shown; hints and deduction assessment use the original clues. Erase or undo another entry if it creates a conflict. Valid hidden singles other than the hint’s example are accepted.
Use notes and hints
In note mode, number keys add or remove candidate notes. Notes can be incomplete or mistaken. Return to answer mode to submit a deduction.
Undo restores the board, notes, selection, thought, and entry mode from before the last entry or note edit. It does not erase opened hints. Hints reveal the technique, number, unit, then answer and reason. They never enter an answer automatically. Using help is not a failure label.
Keyboard and display
Inside the grid, use arrow keys to move and number keys to enter. N toggles notes, Delete erases, and Ctrl/⌘+Z undoes. Tab moves to number, unit, and answer controls. You can enlarge the grid or use browser zoom.
Before taking a break
Choose “Save and pause” and check that your current changes are shown as saved. Failed, blocked, or unsupported saving can leave current changes unsaved. Progress does not sync across devices. See storage and privacy for the limits.
